Torture Awareness Week: Mon, June 21—Sat, June 26:

BFP Team
Monday, June 14, 2021
Call To Action, News, Peace Activism, Peace and Economic Justice

We invite you to join Witness Against Torture in a Torture Awareness Week Fast. We will be fasting in our homes, in deference to the still unvanquished pandemic. You can join us to fast for a day or two, or for all five days. Meet with us on Zoom for mutual support on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Our purpose is to use our own bodies to deepen our understanding of the U.S. use of torture, especially against the Muslim men locked in Guantanamo.

If you would like to join us, please send an email to witnesstorture@gmail.com with RSVP for Fast in the subject line: you’ll receive the Zoom link, a menu of actions you can take during the week, and tips on fasting safely.

Even if you decide not to fast you can still join in taking concrete actions to oppose torture and support torture survivors, from writing the men in Guantanamo to calling/emailing key decision-makers. The Witness Against Torture website also lists events commemorating Torture Awareness Week. We will be adding events and suggestions for actions through the end of the fast so keep an eye on the website for updates. And if you are mounting a vigil or action in your area let us know and we’ll post it.

WED 6/22, @ 7:00 PM: “Blockade the Bombmakers!” was the call that inspired more than 3,500 people – 1,700 of whom were arrested – from 34 states and 10 countries to come to New York City on June 14, 1982, in order to nonviolently shut down the UN missions of the world’s seven nuclear-armed countries. This webinar will feature organizers from War Resisters League telling a few stories of those arrested on that momentous day of action.Register for Zoom link: https://www.codepink.org/06222022

NOW: Israeli forces are ramping up their attack on #MasaferYatta, arresting Sami of @YouthOfSumud. Israeli forces want to discourage local support for the villages at risk of forced displacement by targeting the activists spending their days and nights protecting the space.
