On Wednesday, May 12 Shireen Abu Akleh, a highly respected and beloved Palestinian-American journalist, who was fatally shot while covering a military raid on a Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin. Eyewitness accounts and video confirmed by human rights groups like B’Tselem, described how Shireen was targeted by the Israeli military, while no Palestinians were in the area.

Nakba is the Arabic word for disaster or catastrophe. Nakba Day commemorates the destruction, theft, and permanent displacement Palestinians suffered in 1948 at the hands of the Zionist Jewish militias who later formed the state of Israel. Nakba is not a static event, but rather an ongoing reality for Palestinians. As we approach Nakba Day this Sunday, 2,400 Palestinians in Masafer Yatta face the largest expulsion from their land since 1967. This is yet further proof of the ongoing catastrophe Palestinians face under Israeli apartheid.

In the past year since Israel’s 11-day military assault on Gaza and the historic Palestinian Unity in May 2021, settler and military attacks, as well as home demolitions, have continued to escalate, while mainstream U.S. media outlets have largely ignored violence against Palestinians and ethnic cleansing in Palestine.
