August 7, 2021 @ 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Join Peace Action Bay Ridge on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 1 PM, to deliver this message, with a silent vigil and distribution of literature.
What can we do about Nuclear Proliferation?
In 2004, the World Council of Churches stated that complete termination of nuclear weapons is the best chance at global peace.
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). World governments can abide by this proclamation by taking stronger actions against nuclear proliferation. Today we have the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. The U.N. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), entered into force on Jan. 22, 2021. We need New York City to join hundreds of cities to speak out in support of the TPNW through the ICAN Cities Appeal.
NYC City Council Resolution #0976-2019 calls for the City Comptroller to instruct pension funds to divest from and avoid any financial exposure to companies involved in the production and maintenance of nuclear weapons. NYC Council Intro. #1621-2019 is a bill creating an advisory committee to examine nuclear disarmament and issues related to recognizing and reaffirming NYC as a nuclear-weapons-free zone. Each has 32 co-sponsors (a super-majority.) We need Speaker Corey Johnson to bring them up for a vote!
