“Defense” Budget Keeps Growing!

Call To Action, Peace and Economic Justice, Phone Calls, Social and Economic Justice

The House of Representatives will shortly be voting on a $740 billion National Defense Authorization Act for 2022. This raises the amount of money requested by the Biden Administration, and it does not even include the billions of dollars for nuclear weapons that will be granted through the Department of Energy, bringing the total closer to $770 billion for the military.

This is a colossal waste of money at a time when our “national security” is seriously endangered by climate change, the challenge of Covid-19, and a continuing crisis in our economy. Furthermore, as we have witnessed for the past 20 years, our country’s lop-sided investment in its military has created a disposition to settle international problems with warfare, rather than diplomacy. As exemplified by Afghanistan, this has proved a disastrous approach.

Coming up quickly is an amendment offered by Barbara Lee and Mark Pocan to cut the topline figure of $740 billion by approximately ten percent.

Please call your Member of Congress 202-224-3121 and ask them to:

  • vote in favor of the Lee-Pocan Amendment and
  • vote against the proposed $740 billion 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)

The time to reverse national priorities is now.

Brooklyn For Peace supports the Not On Our Dime Legislation. From our website:"Although these settlements are all illegal under international law, many of them receive funding from organizations registered as charities in New York State. Between 2017 and 2019 alone, these “charities” funneled at least $144M to Israel and its illegal settlements.By allowing these organizations to continue operating as non-profits while funding ethnic cleansing and war crimes, New York State is subsidizing these atrocities. The Not On Our Dime! Act would end this practice and signal that New Yorkers do not support human rights abuses.Write to your New York state representatives now and ask them to co-sponsor Not On Our Dime! Ending NY Funding of Israeli Settler Violence Act (A6943/S6992)."

Brooklyn For Peace

Sep 18, 2023—Here are some photos from yesterday’s historic Climate March To End Fossil Fuels. Some 75,000 walked in solidarity to defend Mother Earth. This summer demonstrated clearly that the crisis and threat of climate collapse is here now, not decades in the future. Thus, the time is now to end fossil fuels which is the main agent of climate destruction. • No more drilling! • No more pipelines! • No more permits for drilling! • No more wars for oil resources! • Joe Biden – Declare a Climate ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ Emergency…Now! ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ Brooklyn For Peace had a strong contingent and marched alongside other peace organizations. They connected the issue of war (most often fought over oil resources) and environmental destruction. One begets the other in a vicious cycle. ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ Young people were leading the way because they will inherit the planet that today’s generation will have left them. They demand a planet they and their children can actually live on. They want action to guarantee that future and they want that action now. ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ ‫‬ They don’t want empty promises and words….they want action now!
