2026 PathMakers to Peace Recipient: Sally Jones of Peace Action New York State

Since 2002, Peace Action has played a leading role in the volunteer life of Sally Jones. When plans for invading Iraq became public in early 2002, she joined other Staten Island activists to form a local anti-war group which became Peace Action of Staten Island (PASI). That initial introduction to Peace Action guided by Brooklyn peace activist Carol Husten has become a commitment that has spanned 25 years. Sally has served on her local PASI board and the state affiliate boards in various roles, including as secretary, treasurer, chair, and currently serves as Vice-Chair of Peace Action Fund of New York State. One of her most satisfying experiences has been collaborating and helping to build coalitions with groups like Brooklyn For Peace, United for Peace and Justice, Action Corps, CodePink, NYC War Resisters League, Women Cross DMZ, Pax Christi, World Can’t Wait, Manhattan Project for a Nuclear Free World, Veterans for Peace, ICAN, and too many others to name. A major accomplishment of Peace Action Fund of New York State, of which she is most proud, is the Campus Organizing Program which this year will support student organizers around the state on 20 campuses.

Near and dear to Sally is the importance of Peace Action’s work organizing in Staten Island. PASI is a proud member of Staten Island 4 Palestine. PASI helps convene the Staten Island for the People coalition which is made up of several local groups that support each other’s protests in front of the Congressional offices of Representative Nicole Malliotakis. Each “Malliotakis Monday,” led by a coalition member, focuses on an issue, e.g., Congressional support for the Gaza genocide, the war in Iran, cuts to health care, corruption, and abolishing I.C.E. Next year will be PASI’s 25th anniversary. Reflecting back on the past 25 years, PASI has been an important anti-war, pro-peace with justice voice on the Island organizing meetings, protests, leafletting, tabling, film, art, and music events, as well as its annual Make Food Not War Dinners, which this year will be held on November 21st.

Since 1979, Sally has lived on Staten Island with her husband David. Together they helped form a local food cooperative, a film society, were active members of the local civic association, as well as several non-partisan civic and Democratic political groups and progressive campaigns. She also serves on the board of the Unitarian Church of Staten Island. In 2017, she retired from a long career in technology. She attended Bucknell University, the College of Staten Island, and received her M.A. in Comparative Literature from the CUNY Graduate Center. She, along with David, are very grateful for their wonderful children, grandchildren and the newest member of the crew, great grandson Henry.
