Thousands Of New Yorkers March
To Defend Immigrants And Refugees
And To Say NO To Trump

Dec 18, 2016

Despite threats of heavy rain, thousands gathered at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza on Manhattan’s East Side. It was a rally and march on National Immigrants Day called by a new coalition: The New York Immigrant Coalition.

After an uplifting rally, thousands marched to Trump Tower to deliver a resounding NO to his anti-immigrant and anti-refugee proposals. Composed of Immigrant rights groups and their supporters, they gathered in the plaza to listen to speeches by City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, NYC Public Advocate Letitia James and others who declared that whether we are born here or abroard — today we are all immigrants! And we will all stand together to defend the rights and lives of anyone who falls victim to hate or the unconstitutional attacks that might emanate from the Trump administration.

Then the march began cross-town to its destination, Trump Tower. With signs held aloft and voices raised the chants rang out: “No Hate! No Fear! Immigrants are welcome here!” This was greeted with applause and support from many people on the sidewalks as the marchers passed by.

We’ll need to continue pushing for these demands with the New York Immigration Coalition:

**Defend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provides 50,000 New Yorkers work permits and other essential resources
**Protect immigrant communities from deportati
**Support refugee resettlement
**Prevent the creation of a Muslim registry

Breaking news (12/22/2016) : Obama to dismantle framework which could have been used for Muslim registry!
Over 300.000 signatures were collected by our friends at  DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving) and others and delivered to the White Hose. While the Trump Administration can still write regulations, they will need to start from scratch. This  gives our communities an opportunity to organize, resist, and possibly even block such efforts. Thanks to everybody who signed!!
